Application for a S'Cool LAB Day at CERN

If you are a teacher interested in bringing your students to a S'Cool LAB Day at CERN, please complete the application form below. The current round of applications is for S'Cool LAB Days at CERN taking place between September 2017 to June 2018. 

Applications should be submitted no later than 14:00 (Swiss time) on Monday 3 April 2017.


  • Demand for S'Cool LAB Days at CERN is extremely high, and we cannot satisfy all requests. Therefore, this is an application form, not a "booking" or "reservation" form. Submitting this application form for a S'Cool LAB Day at CERN does not guarantee you an offer of a place in the programme.
  • All applications submitted correctly will be considered after the application period has ended, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome by email on 14 April 2017.
  • Applications can be submitted in English or French.
  • All fields marked with a red asterisk are mandatory.

S'Cool LAB Days at CERN are available on the dates in the list below. You may apply for one date only. If you have some flexibility in when you would like to attend a S'Cool LAB Day, please indicate this in the "Further information" field at the end of this application form.
Demand for S'Cool LAB Days at CERN is extremely high. Please answer the following questions to help us determine which groups should be given this opportunity. Please be as specific as possible. Creativity will also be rewarded.
Is there something about your school and its students that makes them particularly deserving of this opportunity?
These could include: after-school science club, inviting guest speakers, organizing field trips to other labs, science centres, museums, participating in science competitions, etc.

Prefered S'Cool LAB experiments
The schedule of a S'Cool LAB Day at CERN typically includes three hands-on experiment sessions. By default, a cloud chamber workshop is included for one of the sessions. Below, you should indicate which other S'Cool LAB experiments you would prefer your students to do in the other two sessions, and the reasons for your preferences. Please note that the exact schedule of a S'Cool LAB Day is at the discretion of the S'Cool LAB team, and that all experiments are subject to availability.

Please indicate the preferred or native language of your students. Reminder: Every effort is made to recruit and train guides and tutors who speak a variety of languages, and to match them to the requirements of groups visiting CERN and S'Cool LAB. However, this is not always possible, so tours and workshops can sometimes be offered in English only.
Note: All students must be at least 16 years old (i.e they must have completed their 16th year) at the time of their S’Cool LAB Day at CERN.
Please indicate the approximate number of people in your group (including all students and accompanying adults).
For example, if a student started school (not including "kindergarten"/"nursery"/"pre-school") in 2004/5, they would be in grade 13 in 2017/18. You may apply for a group of students in multiple grades, please specify.
Please note that if you answer "yes", then your bus may be used during the guided tours of CERN.
Note: CERN unfortunately cannot offer school groups any space for pick-nicks. School groups taking part in S'Cool LAB days at CERN are expected to buy lunch in the CERN cafeteria, where there is a wide range of options to suit all tastes and budgets.
Primary contact
The primary contact should typically be a teacher who will accompany the students during their S'Cool LAB Day at CERN. They will be expected to respond to requests for information about all aspects of the trip.

Secondary contact
The secondary contact should be a different person from the primary contact, and should be able to act as a backup in case the primary contact cannot answer a question from the S'Cool LAB team. The secondary contact will also receive automatic notifications from the S'Cool LAB website about the application. For instance, an administrative assistant in the school would be suitable. Please inform your secondary contact that you are assigning them to this role.
