Outline of a S'Cool LAB day at CERN

A S'Cool LAB day at CERN is a 1-day programme (8:45 to 17:30) for high school students in grades 10 and above (ages 16 to 19), including guided tours of CERN's research facilities and workshop sessions of hands-on physics experiments. Our experiments include Cloud ChamberX-Rays, and Electron tube, with more currently in development. During the workshops, students work independently in small groups (2-4 students) on three different experiments, with each lasting about an hour. The students are guided through each experiment by S'Cool LAB tutors, who are specially-trained volunteers from among the CERN scientific community.

Application process

S’Cool LAB days at CERN taking place in the period September 2016 – June 2017 have all been offered to successful applicants.

Applications for S’Cool LAB days at CERN taking place in the academic year 2017/18 are currently closed and will open via this website in spring 2017. Teachers wishing to be notified of future application periods by email can sign up to receive the S’Cool LAB newsletter here.

Teachers' commitments

Demand for S'Cool LAB days at CERN is extremely high. Therefore, places are exclusively allocated based on an application process, and successful applicant teachers are expected to prepare their students specifically for the S'Cool LAB day, with the help of the S'Cool LAB team. Furthermore, to make the most of their time at CERN and engage fully with the specially extended visit programme offered, students are expected to be well-rested when arriving (the day starts promptly at 8:45 and the programme is very full). S'Cool LAB days, like all visits to CERN, are offered free of charge. However, participating students and their teachers are expected to take part in the S'Cool LAB team's physics education research projects, by completing questionnaires before and after their S'Cool LAB day.
